The sense of Agency in college students

In Sociology, Agency is defined as the degree to which an individual has autonomy to make their decisions and act immediately. For many college students, myself included, this is the first opportunity we have to fully set up and execute a plan for our lives. Let’s use education as an example. In middle school and high school, class schedules would be almost entirely picked for us, practically predetermining how the school year would pan out for us. In college, we prove our independence by taking complete control of our courses. Yes, we have requirements we must fulfill, but we put our own twist on it by selecting our major and what general education courses we take. Being able to structure how the school year will go gives college students a feelingĀ of self-rule.
