East Africa has experienced a long history of violence, poverty, and complications over time. Many people from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Sudan, and Eritrea have been forced to leave their homes due to the violence and unrest of their home countries. Rwandans have experienced one of the worst genocides in history. The United States has taken in less than 1,500 refugees from Rwanda. There are a few cases that show that there are refugees living in Harrisonburg.
Eritrea experiences some of the worst human rights in the world under the authoritarian regime of Ethiopia that has controlled Eritrea since the Eritrean-Ethiopian Civil War in the late 90s.
