Fake Blood

DESCRIPTION:
This demonstration makes iron (III) thiocyanate complexes that are deep red in color, resembling fake blood.

TOPICS COVERED:
chemical change
color change
complex ion reactions

MATERIALS NEEDED:
– 0.1M Fe(NO3)3
– 0.1M KSCN
– disposable pipets
– 50mL beaker

PROCEDURE:
1. Squirt a few milliliters of iron (III) nitrate into the beaker
2. Squirt a few milliliters of potassium thiocyanate into the beaker

SAFETY:
Safety goggles should be worn at all times. Iron containing compounds can stain skin.

Handout

This lesson plan‘s topic is the Evidences of Chemical Reactions. Students learn the various evidences, then they get a change to practice identifying them with a hands on activity. Fake Blood is used in the activity portion of this lesson.
