SNP Oral Histories Now in Scholarly Commons

In an effort to meet the growing demand for access to the Shenandoah National Park Oral History Collection, we have moved the oral histories to the Scholarly Commons platform.

The audio files and text files are available for researchers both on and off campus. Photographs of the interviewees are also included for many of the oral histories.

The collection is comprised of 135 interviews with former residents of Shenandoah.¬†Topics discussed by interviewees include mountain folklife, music, food preservation, traditional medicine, agriculture and harvesting, bark peeling, moonshining, chores and family life, and schooling with additional references to the Civilian Conservation Corp, the New Deal, promoter of Skyland Resort and author George Freeman Pollock, and residents’ feelings towards the creation of the Shenandoah National Park.
